OK I installed the latest stable kernel from kernels.org ( 2.6.17.7), installed the latest fglrx driver from ATI and all now works on the Radeon Express 200. Looking through the kernel changelogs I think this issue was fixed in 2.6.16. Anyway, this problem should be resolved if/when Dapper moves
