Hi Nigel,
Thanks for getting back to us. No need to go back and test as it sounds
like this appears to be fixed or at least much better than before. I'm
going to go ahead and close this bug out against the newer kernel.
Obviously if you see this reappear please reopen this bug by setting the

Hi Nigel,
Just want to check back in with you. Can you try the newer 2.6.31-3.14
Ubuntu Karmic kernel, it was recently rebased with the upsted 2.6.31-rc3
kernel. If the issue does manifest itself, could you capture and attach
your full dmesg output? Thanks.

using kernel from apw:
Linux nigel-laptop 2.6.31-1-generic #13apw3 SMP Fri Jun 26 12:23:36 UTC

The kernel for Karmic will target 2.6.31. This sounds promising that
the 2.6.30 based kernels seems to resolve this issue. Lets keep this bug
open and continue to track as we approach Beta to make sure we don't see
any regressions between now and then. Thanks.

Unable to get this behaviour with mainline kernel; however the sound is still
misbehaving badly (actually worse).

OK, an update.
Now running Karmic alpha-2 from a clean install.

Periodically get this in the dmesg, but doesn't seem to affect the
functionality much; seems to recover just fine:

That is excellent news. It might be worth you also trying the latest
kernel for Karmic. This kernel has the Ubuntu delta applied but is
otherwise the same v2.6.30-rc8 kernel which you reported as good on your
system. That would boad well for Karmic at least.

Large downloads cause SATA link
OK, so with 2.6.28-12-generic #43-Ubuntu the SATA issue was less
obvious, but it turned out could still manifest under heavy disk access
load. Further I continued experiencing unpredictable lockups/freezes
with the flashing caps-lock.
I've now tried a mainline kernel:
