Aptitude doesn't work for me either. I already tryed with all apps
(ap-get, synaptic, aptitude) but no result.

I don't think that any dev care about this issue but I will give the
receipt that work to me just in case that will work with other people...
Use aptitude to do the upgrade. apt-get, dpkg or synaptic are giving the
error but I have been able to do the upgrade using aptitude. Don't ask
me why.

The offending code was introduced in 1.15.3ubuntu1 and is in the
kill_bad_alternatives code. This means the function is probably running
into some sort of issue when going through /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives
but due to lack of help via debug output (it's utterly useless except
for locating the scrip

Agreed - it's happening again after the overnight updates requiring
restart. All recent updates are checked but grayed out, although the
'install' button is not and it can be closed.

Update Manager has resumed its normal behavior. Updates, which were
grayed out before, even though they were selected are visible again and
I can scroll down to see them all and check the content.
Unless it re-occurs, this bug can be closed.

My md5sum matches that, and I think that it is a weird problem with the
package and it may be specific to my system (thinkpad t43)

It's 32 bit and the md5sum is indeed db7571063a3146bba596d61a8f823602.
I just checked again, and there are several packages to install; gdm and
some dbus files. It's still hanging with the busy drum, so I'll close it
and use the terminal, which is still cooperating.

Maybe the package is corrupt. Check the MD5 sum:
$ md5sum /var/cache/apt/archives/dpkg_1.15.3.1ubuntu1_i386.deb
The output must be:
db7571063a3146bba596d61a8f823602 if your system is 32 bits
or
8b994e7dc5d5ddb16aacfd1c0a9016df if your system is 64 bits
If not so, there is a bug in the package
My update manager in Karmic 2.6.31-1 checks for updated and reads the
system as normal, but hangs with the busy drum and will not install
updates. Apt-get works fine.
