I had the same issue. Fixing the permissions issue (from 600 to 755)
fixed the problem.

This turned out to be that my $HOME/.gstreamer-0.10 directory had the
wrong permissions (660 instead of 755). Once I adjusted this everything
was fine. I am not sure how this happened, but it would be nice if
rhythmbox could report a more useful error message rather than simply
aborting. I marked
I have not intentionally installed extra plugins for rhythmbox. I am not
using a local python build. rhythmbox works fine as another user.
