I think this was solved with the inclusion of linux-backports-modules-
alsa. In Lucid it is definitely solved.
I am marking it as Fix-released. If the problem persists for some of
you, feel free to reopen it.

Sound was working fine in my MabBook5,2 with 9.04 now I can't configure
the headphones output jack. I'm able to hear the internal speakers but I
can't use the external ones.
When I run alsamixer I don't see the options to toggle the headphones
output jack.

Clarifying my previous comment:
Using alsamixer and increasing the muted 2nd "Speaker" fixes this
problem for me, but by default I cannot get sound from the headphones.

a charm.

With Macbook 1.1 / Karmic earphone seems to be disabled by default.
Internal speaker works though.
Workaround is to start alsamixer in terminal and set volume up for both
speakers.

The problem persists. I have to install the alsa-snapshot everytime the
kernel is upgraded... Also, from time to time, the volume levels are
automatically muted and the only way to access them is through alsa-
mixer.

After upgrade to karmic I've the same issue. Then I open alsamixer in a
console and I found that it show 2 bars labeled "Speaker" in the
Playback tab. The second one was muted and after unmute the speaker now
I got sound when the headphones are connected.
There is no option in the Sound Preference
Here is the output, I am getting a red light in the headphone jack.

What results do you get when you boot from a LIVE CD, does your sound
work without issues in the LIVE CD environment? Also if you could

Same problem with MacBook Pro (5,3). In this case, sound not working at
all. No headphone, no speakers.
