I am having a similar issue on my Dell Inspiron 700m with i915 display,
i left the system unattended for 30 minutes and the system was totally
locked up, had to hard boot. I checked the system logs but nothing
there. I am using the beta version downloaded some 12hrs back.

I've got the same issue (Dell gx270), 9.10 setup freezes in different
places. Nothing wrong with hardware, cause just installed Fedora 12 beta
without issues and 9.04 also works perfectly.

Installing the Karmic Beta-
Tried to install 4 times on the Dell GX-270 that I have used previously
and got failures (screen lock up) anywhere from reading the release
notes to 82% installed. So I tried on a GX-280 and voila! success.
This was on the same hard drive that was used during the
Downloaded and tried to install the Sept. 25 Desktop daily build
Try 1 - Fail at specify partition.
Try 2 - Fail at select manual partition.
Try 3 - Fail at select time zone.
The install program was extremely slow, even for a CD.
Having white characters on a light grey background for keyboard
Another oops. I see my first reply did not make it; finger troubles on my part
I presume.
I bought a new drive just to be sure and installed Alpha 6 on it and still had
serious freeze problems. Today I downloaded the Sept. 22 daily build and
installed it. I still have freezes but not quite
Roy, would be possible install Ubuntu Karmic in other hard disk? only

Bugs,
Just installed Sept. 15 updates. The update locked up the computer at
'installing new version of config file /etc/cron.d/anacron...
On reboot I received the message 'interrupted dpkg run sudo dpkg --configure
-a'. I ran this and it finished OK.
On restart the system came up in terminal mode
Just installed Sept. 13 updates. There is some improvement; leaving the
computer sit at the desktop (1 hour) no longer licked up.
Visual effects are set to none:
boinc client works OK.
Disk usage analyzer works OK.
Gimp (without going through everything) works OK.
Open Office Writer - small test
Oops! Spoke too soon. Went out for dinner, got back after 3-4 hours to find
the desktop locked up... (not licked up:o) again.

I thought that (hard drive problems) could have been the problem, but I
was able to install an older version of Ububtu with no troubles.
Further, I have tried the Alpha 5 desktop release and it would not
install either. I tried the install 6 times and it failed anywhere from
the Alpha warning
