Wow. That comment #14 about 1.4.0. and usblp FINALLY solved my problem.
(I've been battling it for hours now.)
What's more annoying is that it seems that has already been added to
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-cups.conf by some apt-update, a reboot would
have solved the problem.
Would it be possible
After I upgraded (not sure exactly when) my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf was an
exact copy of `mount -l` with some binary characters on the end. Not
sure how that got there. Doing `mv /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.20090906 ; cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf` solved my
I dont know what activity you need. I just updated the latest cups
update and I still have no printer at all. When I try to connect to cups
I get :There was an error during the CUPS operation:
'httpConnectionEncrypt failed'.

Dave Stroud, what we need is the cupsd.conf which your CUPS actually
uses, and that is /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and NOT
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default. Can you attach the correct file, please.

Dave Stroud, I have tried to start the CUPS daemon with your cupsd.conf
file (version 1.4.0 of Karmic, stop system's CUPS daemon and run sudo
cupsd -c cupsd.conf -f) and it works normally for me.
If the CUPS daemon still does not start for you, please attach your
/var/log/cups/error_log, as I

If you have CUPS 1.4.0 already, the USB problem is caused by a new USB
CUPS backend. For this backend the usblp kernel module must be
unloaded.
Edit /etc//etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf adding a line
blacklist usblp
and then run the command
sudo rmmod usblp
Now CUPS should see your USB

I have the same problem, starting cups gives the following error :
# /etc/init.d/cups start
* Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd
Anyone who has this problem, do not yet reinstall CUPS. Before you do
so, please attach your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to this bug report, edit
cupsd.conf setting LogLevel debug and then start CUPS again (sudo
/etc/init.d/cups start). After that attach your file
/var/log/cups/error_log. Thanks.
