For some reason, the default must have been changed. Doing what you said
did restore the normal behaviour, but it was impossible to guess - and
because this feature is very hard to voluntary need, even "new" users of
Firefox would never think of enabling it.

My apologies. You are correct. The default in Firefox 3.0 is to not paste the
URL on middle click. You need to go to about:config and change
middlemouse.contentLoadURL to true if you want that to work. Please let us
know if this works for you.

I think the other bug-report is not the same as this one.
The other bugreport (416924) claims that opening a "New" Tab doesn't work. It

The "Synaptic Package Manager" says firefox-3.0 :
3.0.13+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1
Note that the Ubuntu version should be 9.04, but as i bought it from a local
