Ah, so you do have an USB DVD drive. So it looks like removing the
faulty floppy line from /etc/fstab should do it.

I removed the two /dev/scd0 lines from fstab. The result is that when I
unplug the USB DVD writer the Volumes remained unchanged: cdrom0 and
floppy0 do not appear. I then plugged in the Cruzer USB key and clicked
on the U3 cd icon. It contains three files: autorun.inf, LaunchPad.zip,
LaunchU3.exe.
Finally I plug in the Cruzer 4GB USB key.

Before making Martin's changes to fstab I took a series of 3
screenshots. The EEE PC 701 only has three USB ports. I have a USB
mouse, the USB WD passport drive containing Karmic and the USB Samsung
DVD writer connected but empty when I boot the system in the first
screenshot.

Oh, while you are at it, drop the other /dev/scd0 line as well. Karmic
installers do not add this any more, and it's not necessary any more.

Bu
Ah, so this line in fstab explains the bad floppy:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
Did you happen to add that manually there, or was that set up that way
by the karmic installer?
So for the CD-ROM one, the kernel clearly sees one:

Indeed they are supposed to get automatically detected. Your devkit-
disks dump shows that DK-disks did not see a floppy, and apparently got
confused about an USB device to be a CD-ROM drive.
Can you please do
udevadm info --export-db > /tmp/udev.txt
and attach /tmp/udev.txt, /var/log/kern.log
