Try installing the packages:
brother-cups-wrapper-extra
brother-lpr-drivers-extra
and then select the model in the list when adding the printer. They
provide the driver so no other driver installation should be needed.
Also try upgrading to Natty.
This should have happened automatically. See bug
Troy James Sobotka, you problem is not the one described here. Please
post a new bug, and tell which driver you are exactly using and where
you downloaded it. So I can see whether it is really without binary
blobs.

An associate just attempted to plug in and install a MFC-295CN Brother

He plugged in the USB cable and nothing happened.

FriedChicken, your problem is that your printer was auto-configured
under Jaunty and there HAL was still used for printing. In Karmic it is
not used any more and therefore the hal:///... URIs are invalid.
Printers auto-configured under Karmic will work as they will directly
get the correct usb://..
I guess this has to do something with HAL (is it completely replaced in
karmic already?). After adding the printer manually again it works. So
the driver itself has no problem but the auto-configuration.
/etc/cups/printers.conf:

Confirmed - Brother DCP-120C (uses MFC-210C- or DCP-110C-driver)
cupsd.conf is not empty and the webinterface shows that the Jaunty
config still exists but the priner is shown as disconnected.

I think so, cupsd.conf should never be empty. Do a
sudo cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
and then
sudo /etc/init.d/cups start
Does everything work now?

You get
lpinfo -v
lpinfo: Connection refused
These means that your CUPS daemon is not running. Please start CUPS with
sudo /etc/init.d/cups start
If CUPS does not start, please try restarting CUPS again with
sudo /etc/init.d/cups start

So does the printer not get listed in the application's print dialogs
any more? Is the main window of system-config-printer completely empty
(no printer icons)?
What happens if you click the "New" button in system-config-printer?
Does your printer get listed as one of the discovered devices?

Well, before it immediately appeared in the printer system configuration.
And then I was able to print. Now it isnt accesible in any print dialog.

What exactly happens? Is your printer not detected at all by CUPS or by
system-config-printer? Or are you able to set it up but it does not
print?
