I have the same problem. I'm running Precise Pangolin on a Macbook Air.
After a while, the audio is just crackles. Flash videos play super fast
when this is happening.

i can reproduce this bug on my system
i got lucid with fresh updates and linux 2.6.33
i audio is totally broken after changing volume, i can hear just
ringing, crackingif it fails.
my syslog has no info, so i don't know how i can support you with more data,
ask, ask, ask;)

Please submit a new bug using ubuntu-bug alsa-base. Your hardware
needs the position_fix=1 quirk.

I have the same issue on a dell E1705 laptop. I have modified my
/etc/pulse/default.pa and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf files as
mentioned in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305889, which
improved the audio somewhat. However, I still have this issue. I have
attached my configuration
I got the exact same issue on my Cleva M720 laptop no matter what I try.
My system is up to date (alsa 1.0.21, and I just upgraded my kernel to
2.6.31-16-generic).
I got those lines in user.log, don't know if that's relevant but it seems to me
it occured just when sound got crazy :
