The navigation pane is unnecessary, wasteful, and ugly. All of its
features can be implemented via other means. For Current Activity there
could be a panel that appears at the bottom or the top when stuff is
going on with a progressbar for overall progress and a button to expand

future versions the navigation pane will display arbitrary numbers of
other items: History, individual software sources, removable media
containing packages (e.g. Ubuntu CDs), collections for offline

Agreed. There is a button above the screen which either says "Get Free
Software" or "Installed Software", depending on which is currently
viewed. This could be used as a means of switching to the other view,
and the left sidebar removed, except that the button always seems to
link to the current vi
