Hello. I still have this problem in Ubuntu 13.04. The sound fails all
the time, and the only way to fix it is to manually change the sound
controls in the sound panel. By changing balance and volume, it comes
back. As soon as I increase or decrease the volume again, it goes bad

Ok, well, I'm mostly from LFS/Gentoo/Fedora side of the table, but this
month I'm working off-site and has to use external HDD with Linux Mint 9
(Ubuntu 10.04 LTS based) Live CD copied into as the main working system.
Speakers setup here is an ordinary 5.1 cheap set from Defender connected

I can't figure out how to assign this bug to Natty also. It's affected
by this bug too. I've tested patches from ppa:diwic/ppa and can confirm
they solve the rattling problem, but new problems appears. First, the
sound checking utility from the pulseaudio settings produces very
strange sound
I have a creative surround 5.1 USB card, and the card just gives high pitched
noise in any setting.
The noise gets higher in 5.1 setting.
The bug fix only mentions Maverick, and Lucid, what about Natty?
Is the patch already available in Natty or will be made available soon?

It seems like the previous patch only solved the hiss for amd64 and not

Most of these issues are gone for me with the latest natty updates. But
every so often pulseaudio screws up. I don't get the rattling sound anymore,
but what I do get is this weird high pitch gurgling noise. The only way I
can describe it is that noise you hear on TV when your watching a show

Simon, that's really strange. Since the patch pulse works flawlessly for
me, no sounds what so ever, and I can use balance/volume/sub perfectly
(I actually wish that they would make sub go even lower sometimes,
watching a movie at 1am with deep bass can be an issue). I wonder why

It's still dodgy for me. Both with a Xonar DX and with the inbuilt Realtec
chip on my Asus P8P67 Pro. Every time I open a window or something the sound

The problem is fixed for adjusting volume on my machine but if I change
the fade at all (make the speakers 60% front, 40% back making sound
quality better for movies) the high pitched noise back. This isn't a
deal breaker as the change in volume was clearly the major issue but

In my case the patch don't work.
I have a Philips PSC805, and the problem continues. In order to check, I

Truthfully other people found the SIMD bug and I just packaged the fix.

Problem is much worse again with the newest updates (could have been the
kernel update). I had gotten mine working relatively well as long as I
didn't adjust the front/back or sub settings, now if I adjust the
volume at all the screech comes in and is horrible.

I know my script was trash since the beginning, just had no patience to
continue the project.
We knew the problem all along, but as I suspected, people

Following the steps exactly, no omissions (last one will reboot your
computer).
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xt-knight/ppa
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade
I shut the machine down yesterday night. So I turned it on today to do
your tests. Everything was as usual: can't play anything and PA was
still in 5.1 mode. So I tried it in stereo mode. As expected, sound was
okay. Then I switched it back to 5.1 and... you're not gonna believe it:
it worked!

Okay, so you said, without my patch you get full working 5.1 with
crackling, but with my patch you get only left channel with no
crackling, is that correct? I know my patch works with at least two
channels and I suspect it should work with any number, so let's see
what's going on.

Okay, I think there are problems with me installing lirc pulseaudio
packages with lirc not installed, or other things like avahi. I guess I
did not catch this because I had the packages installed. However,
trying it in a clean chroot revealed the issues.
