I'm fairly certain all these issues have been worked out in current
Hardy. Also note there is now a GUI utility 'Screen Resolution' for
configuring dual monitors which may make the procedure easier.

My video card only has a single DVI port, and I use a splitter to plug
in my monitors using two DVI cables. Therefore I modified your
suggestion slightly.
I put the following at the bottom of my /etc/profile:
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
xr
OK, I found some workaround (based on post by Dragonmaster Lou: http
://ubuntu-utah.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=574426&page=2)
set in profile:
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
xrandr --output VGA-0 --right-of DVI-0 --mode 1280x1024
and in xorg.conf, in section "Screen":

The same problem on Gutsy Gibbon... Radeon 9200, 2x Flatron L1730P, and when
trying to enable second Screen in xorg.conf (as it was on Feisty Fawn) - it
fails with the message:
"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0
requests (0 known processed) with 0 even
I'm having the same problem. The 'Hardware Information' app lists my
video card as: Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]
Under Feisty I was successfully using Xinerama to enable dual monitors.
Just this morning I upgraded to Gutsy, and no matter what I do I cannot
get it to work.
When I booted into G
CrawfordBest: please try with 7.10 beta if it works better. You can
change the dualhead-settings using xrandr (man xrandr). Cloned mode is
used by default I think.
others: mergedfb and xinerama-support has been deprecated in favor of
randr-1.2.

Here too, radeon 9550 cannot get dual monitors config to work, the
'screens and graphics' crashes. Changing xorg.conf also don't worked. on
Feisty everything worked well but with fglx drivers.
