This has been fixed as part of upstream GNOME #602141 [1,2] which also fixes the invocation of shells that don't understand the -l and in the 0.18 release: * open $SHELL - (i..e login shell) in the SSH case * open $SHELL (i.e. no login shell) in the local case. [1]
