When I attach the disk plugged into usb-ide cable, I get the following (dmesg):

Usb2 to ide storage device not working properly
I had exactly the same error under Linux. I opened the external disk
case and switched the jumper from Master w/ Slave Present to Single
or Master and the problem was solved. Things worked fine then.
