This problem does not occur in 10.04 which is what I have been using now.

I resolved it this way, I hope it may work for you too.
1. Go to System/Network Connections/ click on the tab Wireless
2. If there is any wireless connection name listed highlight and then click on
Delete.
3. Restart your Ubuntu 9.10.
4, After restart follow (1)
5. Then in the Wireless Tab click
