I get this too, with Xubuntu 9.10. A few flashes and then it gives up
and continues to boot, so I guess the filesystem is not being checked!

I'm getting this, but after reaching about 5% my monitor displays
signal out of range. If I hit ESC it usually goes on to load OK. I
have an onboard ATI Radeon 200 Express. My home is on a separate
partition, but not encrypted.

Same here, I hit escape and got general error mounting filesystems
I had to let the disk check run its course, then I was able to boot
normally.
I am using an encrypted home folder, too (in karmic), don't know if that
is a commonality here too.

I am getting the same issue. I did a clean install, but added an old
ext3 drive to my fstab. I had to restart due to getting a kernel problem
reported by apport. Upon restart, the old ext3 drive wanted to be
checked. After about 5-6 minutes of the flashing, constantly reporting
