I had the same issue. I had the linux-server package installed which had the linux- image-2.6.31-19-server installed. But since I'm running ubuntu on a ESX Vm I tried to install the linux- virtual package. Aptitude tried to install the linux- image-2.6.31-19-virtual but didn't succeed. This
