it happens because the postinst script of poker-network tries to access
the database although mysql-server has not been launched yet.

confirm johan successfull attempt.
rmbreedlove did not follow up in a long time, I assume he somehow solved the
problem.

What did you answer to debconf question about database asked by python-
poker-network ?
I just tried to install python-poker-network on karmic without problem:
pro...@pasokon:~$ sudo apt-get install python-poker-network

It had been installed before, and I went back to the Synaptic package
manager to do a reinstall - which was successful. Again I was prompted to
configure the connection to mysql server from Python Poker 2.5, and had the
same problems.
The command string you sent resulted in successful connection.
Did you install mysql server before or at the same time you installed
poker-network package ?
Do you manage to connect to mysql using the following command ?
mysql -u root -p
