Okay, i managed to pin down the culprit.
It's gnome-screensaver in combination with virt-manager.
Having the mouse cursor grabbed by virt-manager displaying a kvm session blocks
gnome-screensaver activation.
Powermanagement blank screen still works.
After leaving the kvm window, gnome-screensaver
Seems to be a glitch of the power management.
After playing around with the "turn screen of after x minutes" setting, the
problem disappeared
