suspect that it is fixed in ALSA 1.0.24, so if linux-backports-modules
included alsa drivers from 1.0.24 (which it yet does not do) that might

I tested today the microphone and headsets in Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu
11.04 and the results are:
Karmic (Alsamixer shows: Conexant ID 5066):
-the microphone is working, except for the analog microphone when using a
headset (the Vostro 320 has a built in camera, that's the microphone that works)

I've tried today with kernel v2.6.34-rc7-lucid but no luck. The
situation is exactly the same. None of the microphones work. This
machine uses onboard Intel HD Audio {Audio device [0403]: Intel
Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

I installed Jaunty and Karmic and in both cases the microphones are

seem to work.

Thanks again Daniel. I am trying to use the 1/8 inch headphones and mic
jacks, not a USB. They are just like the jacks on an MP3 player / iPod.
When I plug the headphones into that jack, nothing changes (same sound
comes out of the laptop speakers).
Integrated mic and speakers work fine.
