I just did the following:
1) Restart the computer and in gdm choose Restart: no problem.
2) On the restart, log in (no password error) and immediately log out, choose
Restart in gdm: nothing happens.

@Per Ångström: I think they are related, because if you enter the
username correctly the first time, you can shut down the machine; only
if you enter a wrong password (before entering a correct password)
ubuntu won't shut down.

have to select your username again and then it restarts?
