This bug is no duplicate, I don't have icedtea on my system.
Moreover, the link you post on Sun network does not work.
No wonder, since they have been purchased by Oracle it is all a big mess.

People really need to stop using Sun's proprietary Java, and it should
definitely be removed from Ubuntu. Also, *no* files in /usr/lib should
ever be modified by a user, only by the package manager. Install

Sun's Java was already removed from Lucid.

I restarted the system and it would not start at all, tons of errors in the
file system, unable to boot, unable to run fsck.
I had to go into recovery mode and run fsck

i had this problem in Firefox (namoroka) 3.6.2pre and Google chromium. i
followed this steps:

Please note that in this line:
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
mozilla-javaplugin.so /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50
I had to change i386 - amd64

Yes, the java 6 plugin is correctly installed and it is the latest version.
Works fine in Opera.

I'm having the same problem with kubuntu karmic koala. I've installed
sun-java6-* packages, including sun-java6-plugin, and created a symlink of
libjavaplugin_oji.so in the mozilla's plugins directory:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
and firefox's:
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins
but nothing works. If I try

To install missing plugins I just followed the alert in the Namoroka bar on top
Install missing plugins.
Anyway, that did not fix anything, still no Java.
Damn Namoroka also disabled couple plugins that I use for development.
