I'm still on Karmic. lspci reports my card reader as:

I am running Lucid beta1 and I had the same problem so as you suggested I
booted using liveCD Karmic 9.10 and was able to format the sd card.
Proceeded to retry this with Lucid and this time it did work just fine.
The funny thing is that prior this I tried over a dozen times and could not?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. There are a couple
more pieces of information which may be useful here.
On one of the computers which exhibits this problem, could you try
booting with an older LiveCD, or a different distro's LiveCD, and see if
you can still reproduce this?
