The problem appears to be solved in kubuntu/maverick. Nouveau is working
properly in that distribution. I have not tried with any others.

This is getting confusing. I removed the xorg.conf, and rebooted without
the 'nomodeset' option. Nouveau came up properly, in 1680x1050
resolution. I do not know why it is now working; there have been a few
updates. When I reinstalled the xorg.conf, and un-commented the
"monitor" stuff, nouveau cr

Argh. The apport bug hooks were broken for a while, and did not attach
the necessary information to this bug.
Could you please move your xorg.conf out of the way, reboot without
nomodeset, and run
apport-collect 537745
again? Thanks!

Comment out the "Monitor" section in xorg.conf, and the "Monitor" entry in the
"Screen" section.
Add "MetaModes" and "Modes lines in the screen section of xorg.conf, like this:
