Looking at all of the comments and with nothing added for over 10 years
I'm closing this now with a status of 'Opinion'. No doubt Ubuntu and its
various flavours will follow upstream design decisions.

In the Power Menu, Suspend should be renamed to Sleep because sleep
falls on a continuum with hibernation/Hibernate, and sleep is a more
intuitive term for new users (you can verify this by asking ten people

I remember working through this 4 years ago when I was focused more on
the power management. The aim at the time the aim was just to get some
better consistency;

Suspend is technically more correct than Sleep and I'd prefer that.
But the most important thing is that whatever name it is called, it is
called with the same name everywhere. Otherwise it is just confusing.

I, on the other hand, prefer Suspend. To me, sounds SOO much better

As mentioned in dup Bug #661383 , sleep is already used in gpm
preferences.
I'v mentioned this bug in gnome-design, and Upstream is interested in
making this change.

Dear Team,
What's wrong with suspend ? I fail to understand the point here.
From google search:
[Suspend mode powers down devices that are not needed in order to safe
electricity, e.g. it may switch the monitor, sound card or modem off and turn
them back on when you return from suspend mode.]
From dup Bug #661383
Outside discussions of whether suspend should be called sleep or sleep
should be called suspend, there needs to be consistency.
Specifically in Power Management Preferences, both words sleep and
suspend are used and mean the same thing. Under Actions is Put

Vish,
I completely accept that sabdfl's comment has made this bug popular and
important :) but I had deleted the branch from lp. Fortunately, the branch
still exists on my machine (undamaged) so I am pushing again.

Bilal, No this has not been fixed in Maverick.
This bug has stalled since:
- It needs to be reworded in gnome-power-manager , gnome-session .
- This needs fixing upstream first to enable proper translation support. If we
change this is Ubuntu it will break translations.
Could you submit your
Vish,
There is a way to edit PO files without breaking translations. I am
making a quilt patch, and pushing the revision into the branch. Doing
that now.

Vish, we have a huge Ubuntu translation team to handle these, please
don't use this as a basis for not fixing something in Ubuntu
