I have the same problem with ubuntu lucid and samsung screen. when using hdmi, resolution goes up to 1920x1080 but desktop menus are out of the screen frames. more than this, if using vga cable, only resolution possible is now 1360x768,and some other below, leaving black lines on the sides of

That's the thing though. The screen is a 1080p screen. (Or it's a limitation of the video card - which can't drive the higher setting. I can't tell which). The resolution selector doesn't state whether the resolution is 1080i or 1080p, and perhaps it should. See bug 550486 about the failure to

Usually these problems are specific to the TV you are using. When you try to use a 1920x1080i mode the TV is probably enabling overscan automatically because it is a TV resolution and not enabling it for the 1360x768p native resolution. Your TV should have an option in the menus to disable
