So, is this - as it turns out -
a) a bug in parted
b) a bug elsewhere
c) an RFE elsewhere
d) not a bug at all
I am almost inclined to say d) but then on the other hand software
should behave well even in adverse conditions so it might be c)

Parted fails to correctly read partition table
I booted using the Edgy Knot 1 CD and had the same problem.
However I looked at the partition list and saw what was wrong: There is
a zero length partition (partition 7) that overlaps with another
partition (number 6). I deleted partition 7 and it solved the problem.
It looks like parted needs
