Thanks Harry (#26). I hope I'll have the time to test the PPAs you

Yup, you are 100% correct there.
I've forgotten about this bug - until you commented & I got the
notification about it. I suffered from similar problem to you. But I
managed to resolve it by
Seems the 3d screensaver was to blame. After configuring the system to
not launch any screensaver but just put the monitor to sleep the system
didn't show the problem anymore.
My guess is there is a bug in the video driver that shows when the 3d
section of the video card is used.

Hello, dear developers.
I've got the next bug. In both Ubuntu versions 9.10 and 10.04 i use Core i3 +
Intel H57 with integrated Graphics card.
My system freezes sometimes, I tracked only one condition (when I'm playing

No more lockups until now. Maybe it's too early to make conclusions, but
before disabling 3d desktop effects the gpu freezes happened almost
daily. Will report back in case of further problems.

I'm also seeing the freeze and the errors posted by Marcello Romani.
I have Intel DH57JG board with i5 650 processor. Nothing else on the
board (using the integrated graphics).
Using Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-28-generic.
This issue progressed for me to the point where it would occur very

I have seen this bug several times on a brand new Core i3 540 HP system.
I see messages like these in the dmesg log:

GPU hung
[239983.083616] render error detected, EIR: 0x

Can the updated intel-relevant code from the newer kernel be backported
into Lucid's to fix this? Or are we looking at a situation where the
only solution is using a newer kernel (eg, disabling desktop effects and
waiting for 10.10 to release)?

I installed also the final 2.6.34 (not the drm-intel-next version). This
version works fine too.

Upgrading to the newest intel driver 2.11 and libdrm will not fix this
issue. I tried this also.

I've seen the occasional freeze since assembling a Clarkdale system -
Core i3-530, Intel DH57JG, 2x2GB G.Skill ECO 1.35 DDR3 memory - and I've
noticed that it doesn't seem to apply the visual effects I select,
either.
I figured this was a deficiency in the older driver that shipped with
10.4, so I
I installed the latest drm-intel-next kernel (linux-image-2.6.34-997)
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/
Testing it some hours now and I does not have a freeze anymore.

BTW: I'm using Kubuntu 10.04. Maybe the problem is in Compiz. This would
explain why I'm not affected as I use kwin.

Lars,
Can you tell what memory modules you use and whether you tried to change them
in order to solve the problem?
FreeMinded,
Same question--can you please name the memory modules you use?
Thank you.

Seems like disabling the visual effects (in the Appearance Preferences
window) makes the system stable so it's most likely that the issue
relates to how Ubuntu utilises 3D facilities of the core.
Could anyone please confirm that:

A couple of things to add:
1) Disabling of one of the cores in BIOS doesn't help.
2) No peripheral cards inserted to the motherboard -- only the processor,
memory and motherboard installed.
