Problem seems to be fixed in Gutsy so I close this bug report.
Feel free to open it again if it still happens under Gutsy with the new Intel
driver.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Final Live CD? In Gutsy i810
driver is deprecated and intel driver is used instead.

This bug has nothing to do with suspend. It also happens if you switch
to the console and back.
Seems the openvt (or whatever) code isn't doing its job properly.

i get this on a macbook first gen (i810) with edgy running with a feisty
kernel.
see attached screenshot.
it reliably happens that when i suspend/resume the options disappear.
restarting the X server always brings the options back.
after resume i can, in fact, successfully rotate the screen.

I doubt that this bug is i810 specific. Something similar happens also
with the ATI driver. See also bug #70963.

I think I am a bit behind in times,
So does RandR should automatically detect possible resolutions in
addition to allowing switching between then without restarting X?
I wonder if these warnings in the log file are relevant to this problem

There seems to be a simple way to fix the issue with resolutions. I
don't know if there is something similar for the rotation issue.
The xorg.conf file had entries only for the 1400x1050 resolution
I added one for 1280x1024. Now after resume, I can change resolutions using
xrandr
SubSection "Di
I confirm this. I cannot change resolution after resuming. Only specific
to edgy AFAIK

I can replicate this bug on edgy.
The native resolution for my laptop screen is 1400x1050. The native
resolution of the lcd panel connected to the laptop docking station is
1280x1024.
Typically I use the laptop with the lcd panel (screen closed). Once I
suspend the laptop and then wake it back up
