Thanks, that's fixed it for me too - Compaq Presario CQ42, built-in
speaker and headphone jack both work now.

I had this same problem until someone asked me if alsa was muted...
after install, it mutes the external speakers. from terminal = alsamixer
. make sure it doesn't have speakers set to zero.

I did a fresh install of 10.4 on an HP dv8, I have no sound whatsoever.
If this is not resolved within 24 hours, I will find a different
distribution. I have tried every suggestion I found.
