The installer does not assume you already have a bootloader installed.
It installs to the MBR of the disk that you're putting Ubuntu on unless
you tell it to do otherwise (in the advanced dialog off the summary
page).

A possibility. I had a 250GB IDE hard drive connected up at the time
with one single NTFS partition and no OS installed on it. I didn't tick
to 'use' this on the installation.

Moving to the Ubiquity package as it should have installed Grub. I don't
know if it's possible that it installed Grub but wrongly detected
another drive as your primary boot drive.
