Upstream claims this problem was fixed in cdrom-detect, so the remaining
issue may be the 7-zip long file name problem that is described in Bug
234185 (i.e., you may not be able to certain utilities, such as
UNetbootin). Rob, which "burning" utilities have you tried?

I still have the problem with apt when trying to install from a USB
drive on the 11.04 daily build for x386 (not 64 bit). It copies all the
files over then apt stats and cannot detect the CDROM.

The "cdrom-detect/try-usb=true" functionality differs on different USB
drivers. On my Kingston DATATraveler 1 GB it does not work at all, but
on a Dane Elec 4 GB device it hangs later in the process (Failed loading
installer components from CD).
I'am trying this on an INTEL D510MO installing Ubunt

Ubuntu Server 10.10 release final still has the bug. "cdrom-detect/try-
usb=true" suggested work around does not work with both Ubuntu USB-
Creator & Unetbootin.
Tried on various machines both i386 and AMD64

Dell Precision 380 with no 3 SATA HDD and no CD-ROM Drive
Exact same problem here, with both Ubuntu USB-Creator & Unetbootin
Work-around found by adding "cdrom-detect/try-usb=true" in Unetbootin
"Tab" edit command-line screen
