after that removing .ICEauthority, .Xauthority and logging out and logging in
again everything seems to work except that a password isn't asked when it
normally should be asked (or sudo is remembering it too long or something).

I removed .ICEauthority and .Xauthority, logged out (ctrl-alt-backspace
because log-out also didn't work) and logged back in.
alacarte still doesn't show up in the menu but IMHO it might be
unrelated.

I suspect that in my case (commandline-only-installation with Edgy Beta)
the whole user-adding step/question was skipped.
A simple $ adduser username doesn't entirely solve it because :
-there's no admin group. Maybe others are missing as well. (update-passwd saw
no problems)

I had a similar experience with the Edgy Beta alternate installer. I did
the command-line-only installation. No normal user account was created.

You can add a new user by booting in Single-user mode, (press ESC when GRUB
start) then with the root account enter this command:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~ $ adduser username
