Excellent, changed it to end in .1.1 and it works perfectly, now I'll just
have to figure out why it is automatically setting it to .1.100

With the real one being at x.x.1.1 (Cisco).
You get a 5 seconds timeout on each DNS request.
Double check /etc/resolv.conf? maybe set by dhcp.

download?

Unfortunately this didn't change anything either. It might also be helpful
to note that the update manager behaves the same way as the browser. When
downloading updates it will stay at zero percent for about 10 seconds, then
start downloading the files.
