I wonder if this is related to console switching, video modes, etc.
What happens if you try to switch VTs from VT1 to VT7 and back, is the
password still shown in the clear?

Hmm.. I don't know what to say. I can still reproduce this on my machine..
However, I did see it once where the password I typed was hidden, but I
couldn't reproduce that anymore either..
Not sure if this helps. But I use grub, and typed 'e' to edit the Linux boot,
then I typed 'e' again on the
