User config problem according to previous comment, closing. Feel free to
reopen if you can generate a broken .asoundrc from an Ubuntu config tool

I believe the problem was in my .asoundrc
I deleted my .asoundrc and then reconfigured alsa and it works
This is NOT because my .asoundrc was wrong in dapper.
It is just that the alsa hda-intel drivers are changing rapidly between
versions of alsa.
So I think what happened is what alsa put in
