i can confirm this, this seems to be severely broken.
after upgrading to kubuntu 10.10 from 10.04, kdm seems to start as
usual, but after typing in the password and hitting enter nothing
happens. console login fails as well, it just freezes after the
password.
a nasty workaround:
boot in recovery
This appears to be the same as 658197 -- the bug is actually in util-
linux.
While that bug obviously needs to be fixed, I wonder if switching to
pam-mount would be a good idea, since it's more general? Unfortunately,
pam-mount also has a nasty bug, in that it doesn't pass options to mount
proper
