I've done some more testing with Mainline kernels. Sound is OK up to and
including kernel linux-
image-2.6.33-02063305-generic_2.6.33-02063305_amd64.deb, but fails in
all versions I tested from linux-
image-2.6.34-02063401-generic_2.6.34-02063401_amd64.deb onward.

I have now tested on the Mainline kernel linux-
image-2.6.37-999-generic_2.6.37-999.201101081705_amd64.deb, and it has
the same problem: no audio and the call trace. I also tried the older
Ubuntu kernel linux-image-2.6.32-26-generic, and it DOES have sound.
So to summarise:
- Ubuntu kernel linux
Upgraded to 10.10 today (10th Jan 2011). uname -a '2.6.35-24-generic #42-Ubuntu
SMP Thu Dec 2 02:41:37 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux'.
I have this same problem. The card was working fine in 10.04 before upgrade.
lsmod shows snd-hda-intel loaded, but /proc/asound/cards says '--- no
soundcards ---'.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
