I have this same model of laptop (I also noted that the internal
subwoofer did not shut off with a headphone plugged in). The issue did
not exist in 10.04 (amd64), but does in 10.10 (amd64) even at the latest
revision as of this writing. I did figure out a work-around for my
particular scenario.
Resolved in latest maverick ubuntu 10.10 64bit.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
