I uninstalled flashplugin (as it keeps crashing anyway), but the problem does
not go away.

the shotwell.gdb file you attached shows that the Flash plugin has not
actually been uninstalled, since
/home/thiemann/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so appears prominently in
the stack trace. That also confirms that Flash is actually the problem
here. So this in fact

this might be http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2776, which has been fixed in
the Shotwell trunk. Could you uninstall the flashplugin-installer
package (i.e. Adobe Flash) to see if that makes the problem go away? If
it does, then this is a bug which we've already fixed.
