Wow, I have no idea how I managed to get into that state. Uninstalling
and reinstalling hplip-gui confirms that this is fixed, if it was ever
an issue.

hp-toolbox is part of the hplip-gui package and hplip-gui depends on
python-qt4-dbus. So if your HPLIP is from the Ubuntu packages, the
problem should not occur.

Which program of HPLIP did you try to start? How did you start it (menu,
command line? post exact command line).
In a default installation on GNOME/GTK-based Ubuntu flavors (Ubuntu,
Edubuntu, Xubuntu) we do not ship the graphical user interface of HPLIP,
as it needs the Qt$ libraries and these do
