I notice now that the problem doesn't always occur. I now have a
commercial dvd that seems to play normally in different players. How can
i find out what the difference might be?

I have the same problem on Edgy here. I've install libdvdread3 and
libdvdcss. I can't play the dvd in mplayer, totem, gxine and ogle.

Ogle and oKle work but not without problems. VLC and Totem do not work at all.
I am wondering if it is possible to use a commercial palyer on the Ubuntu
platform like RealPlayer or Quicktime.

After testing, Totem refuses to play DVDs at all, Mplayer freezes and
requires a force quit from the system monitor, and VLC just plain
refuses to play the DVD. I don't know where this bug report should go
