This bug is about showing the hint by default.
The problem is: If I want to enter grub menu and notice that the hint is
missing, I am probably not able to boot anymore. So I won't be able to google
how to enable that hint. And if I was able to google, I woudn't need the hint,

We don't show it by default on purpose. We have gone to a lot of
trouble over the years to have a smooth boot up splash screen without
any obtrusive and/or cryptic text. This hint would fly in the face of
that policy.

I suspect that there would be both design and localisation issues there
(cramming a localisation framework that early into boot would be
difficult).
I'm leaving the bug open since I do see that it is a problem for users,
but I don't know of a plausible fix at this time, unfortunately.

I think localisation could be done by grub-update, but in my opinion an
english hint would be sufficient for non-english users.

That' crazy. If I screw up something in my boot process or if I update
to a new kernel that won't work on my system, there has to be a visible
hint how to enter the rescue menu.
How about a splash screen that says 'To enter Grub menu, restart
computer and hold SHIFT key pressed'?

The design is that if the computer fails to boot then the next boot will
always show the GRUB menu, without needing to press any key. If that
isn't working for you, then you have some other bug.
Are you by any chance using any or all of LVM, RAID, or btrfs?

I have a Natty as a VirtualBox-Machine under Jaunty. There was a broken
virtualbox-x11-guest-utils package in Natty which made the virtual
machine simply turn off on X11 start. The grub menu didn't appear by
itself. I reported the problem but was told that Jaunty is no longer
supported.

Well I see there can't be a delay since faster booting is a big goal for
Ubuntu. But can't there be a short hint on that purple empty startup
screen, or would that be regarded as bad design?
