I don' know what changed, but I kept Unity disabled these days (I needed a
stable system) and when I re-enabled it, unity-place-applications was working.
I'm trying to reboot, now; I did what you asked right after re-enabling, so I'm
not sure that unity-place-applications is working because of
I'm setting it as invalid, because it is working now.

@Claudio: Can I get you to open a terminal and do:
pkill -f unity-applications-daemon
/usr/lib/unity-place-applications/unity-applications-daemon
Keep that terminal around and try to do one of the failing searches,
then paste- or attach the terminal output to this bug. Thanks!

It also doesn't work when using the global search, but in the screenshot you
can see that I tried to filter my search with a random string (asdfghhjklòò)
and the list of applications didn't change.
I mean: I can't refine the application list shown in unity-place-applications
using the search
From the screenshot it looks like you clicked on the applications place
so that seems fine. Do you mean that search doesn't work through the
global search (clicking on Ubuntu icon - searching for something)?
