upstream development appears to have stopped.

Faced similar problem, Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. Fixed after installed hal.
As a newbie it took way too much time just to find the solution posted here.
Please fix it soon, it really decrease the noob's happiness from using Ubuntu
LTS.

The fix for hal denpendency is patched in the code already, we just need
that fabrice test it and do the package stuff. :D

After doing "sudo apt-get install hal" as suggested by fabrice, the
issue does not come up again.
This can be an official workaround.
