this should be fixed now in Oneiric whereby the input level slider is
shown in the sound menu when an application like skype (which has input
and output) or an application like gnome-sound-recorder which just uses
input.

I do intend to expand this yes, but for this cycle the voip use-case was the
only scenario dealt with in the spec.

Hi David,
Essentially how it works currently is that is watching for a sink input
event. This happens when a client application starts to output audio to
the device output (sink). If the service (which drives the menu) sees
that a new sink input has the correct media.role. then it will show the

@Robert: While having it only appear while you're in a skype or mumble
call sounds great, is it possible for it to appear whenever any
application attempts to use the microphone? I was using Gmail's voice
plugin, so even if I was using Natty I wouldn't benefit from the current
implementation,

Yes, it is implemented already, but it's only implemented if skype or
mutter is using your microphone (the microphone volume control appears
when you initiate or accept a call). Are you suggesting that the
microphone volume control should be in the sound menu all the time, not
only during skype or
