Same error, sonypi: probe of sonypi failed with error -16 found at end
of kernel log.
xubuntu 8.10 (2.6.27-7-generic)
old Sony Vaio PCG-F560, 256 MB, 600 Mhz
I get a kernel panic (total freeze, blinking caps-lock, scroll lock)
usually at the graphical log-in screen; sometimes just before I try

'linux' kernel package). Can anyone confirm this is still an issue with
the Hardy Heron 8.04 release (2.6.24 kernel). If so, can you test the
latest Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha release (2.6.27 kernel) -
I have very same problem with OpenSUSE 10.3.
Workaround is
modprobe -r sony-laptop
modprobe sony-laptop

Installed Fedora core on my PCG-FX804 Sony Laptop, i am receiving the errors as
above,
Namely in Ctrl+Alt+F1, i get a scrolling screen with the text:
sonypi: failed to request ioports
sonypi: probe of sonypi failed with error -16
Starts before i logon and

Hi Kyle,
past Sunday I installed latest Feisty knot 5 on the same VAIO on which I had
the problem and it seems to me that the problem is not present anymore. I
will be back home on Saturday; I will check again and post both /proc/iomem
and dmesg.

Can you attach /proc/ioports and /proc/iomem along with a full dmesg
including the attempt to load sonypi?

ugly temporary fix to reduce cpu usage:
rm or mv the file
/lib/modules/2.6.20-6-generic/kernel/drivers/char/sonypi.ko
