Does moving ~/.mozilla to ~/.mozilla.bak help? Does this happen as well under
gnome or any other window manager? (If you're looking for a small one to test
under, "sudo apt-get install icewm", logout, and login under it... you can
uninstall it after you've checked).

I changed theme to Tango 2.0.0 and that helps, so I think the issue is
with the the default theme of Fx so I will update the description, then
try some of your suggestions.
